North Carolina breweries won 14 medals — three gold, three silver and eight bronze — at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). This is the second-most ever, behind only 2016’s haul of 17 medals. Charlotte-region breweries nabbed three medals.

Olde Mecklenburg won a bronze for its Hornet’s Nest in the South German-Style Hefeweizen category.

Sycamore won a bronze for its Sun Grown Fresh Craft Lager in the American-Style Lager or Malt Liquor category. In its last win in 2015, Sycamore won in this category with its Southern Girl lager.

Sycamore won another bronze for its Sun Grown in the Light Lager category. Why? Not sure. Sycamore has proven consistently good with lagers, though!

Competition was stiff and again record-breaking with 98 categories and 7,923 individual entries compared to 96 categories and 7,227 individual beer entries last year.

Judges award a gold, silver and bronze medal in each category — so long as they feel a beer is not only among the top three of the category but deserves a respective medal for achieving excellence to the style (e.g., a category’s top beer might only receive a silver medal if nothing was worthy of gold).

Lynnwood Brewing (Raleigh) won two gold medals last year and again did well with a gold for its Saison Du Bois (American-Belgo-Style Ale) and silver for its Mosaic Pale Ale (American-Style Pale Ale). The American-Style Pale Ale category had the third-most entries (199) behind two different IPA categories.

Carolina Bauernhaus Ales (Anderson) took home South Carolina’s lone medal (a gold) for its Source Series Opuntia (Experimental Ales).

The gold medal for Herb and Spice Beer stayed in North Carolina, just driving up I-85. New Sarum Brewing (Salisbury) won with its Lemon Balm and Beets Wheat. Last year, NoDa won with its NoDajito.

The GABF, first held in 1982, is hosted annually in Denver, Colorado, by the Brewers Association.
